In the hands of the gods

Saw this the other day, what a great road trip style movie! Now I love me a good old triumph-over-adversity story (a 'battler' story) and this fit the bill really well and ended up being really enjoyable too.

The movie charts the story of a group of young footballers who play it freestyle and if/how they make it to their goal (pardon the pune). And their goal? To meet who they consider to be the greatest freestyler of them all, Diego Maradona. These guys idolise him and identify with how Maradona came from a poor background and used his football skills to make something of his life (but let's not think about his other reputation for now!). These guys also mainly come from a troubled/estate background, so football becomes their passion and a skill that they could teach themselves then practise practise practise.

They want to go meet El Diego by blagging their way out of the UK and toward Buenos Aires, 'busking' to show off their tricks and then using the cash to get around. They busked anywhere that will have them; footpaths, restaurants, bars, sports arenas, etc. There was humour of course, when you bring together a bunch of boys there will be tension and there will be sparks and these episodes provided the necessary comic relief.

I found it quite amazing how much dedication these guys had for their mission, you were rooting for them to succeed from the word go. There are moments of disappointment for them (and for you) but you see them persevere to get closer to their dream. They faced challenges, learnt from these, got more focused and also grew up along the way. These guys are really talented, watching them doing their performances had your eyes constantly flick around to follow their moves. Now I've never been much of a sports aficionado but their performances seemed so effortless and this had me massively impressed.

I really enjoyed this movie and I highly recommend it, so check it out football fans!
